How the estimate is calculated

  1. Wall area = 2 x (length + width) x wall height.
  2. Paintable area = wall area - doors and windows.
  3. Coverage workload = paintable area x coats x (1 + allowance).
  4. Paint volume = coverage workload / label coverage.

The calculator also rounds up to a whole gallon as a simple shopping reference. Actual can combinations may produce less overbuy.

Before buying paint

Confirm whether the quoted coverage is per coat and whether primer is required.

Use a higher allowance for porous texture, spraying, color changes or uncertain measurements.

Match finish, base and tint, and keep batch information if more paint may be needed.
